This exhibit of deconstructed, fragmented, and manipulated found photographs grew as much from Rob Nixon’s work as a writer as from an interest in visual arts. In his plays, Nixon frequently deals with the idea of narrative, how we structure random events into stories through which we seek to impart meaning and order to our lives and the world around us. The snapshot photographer similarly acts as a creator of narrative, choosing what subjects and moments of real life to capture and present a form that can be told/read/seen over and over, not only representing but often superceding the reality on which it’s based. Playing off the image’s susceptibility to manipulation and falsification, just like the elements in storytelling, these pieces explore how, even in the most casual, mundane snapshot, the choice of framing and the composition within it always implies what has been left out, not seen, not told, not intentionally represented, including what lies outside the frame as well as what has been relegated to the background, the shadows, and the margins in order to privilege the subject—the story—the photographer most wants to capture. And in doing this, new visions emerge from the “facts” of reality.
